Preconventional Morality
Kohlberg's preconventional morality states that children obey rules so they won't get into trouble. What if a child in that stage of development does things even though they know it is wrong?? Do they think that the benefit out ways the consequence? Could it be the parents fault for setting rules but not consequences at all? I happen to know a child like this. Her mom sets rules and the child blatantly disobeys the rules but when told they weren't allowed to do something she says "I know" but continues to do it. Is there something wrong with this child, or is she just going through a stage--even though this has been going on for the four years I have known her.

I do believe that it is the parents fault. They are the ones who set/make the rules. If you're going to make a rule, you should always follow through with the consequences and rewards. It doesnt make sense if you don't because then the child may think he/she can get away with things. I know that when i was younger, i always thought about the consequences because I knew they were worse then the benefits.
